From the 26th District:
If you come across a vehicle that has possibly been broken into, do not touch it. Call 911.
The officer may be able to get prints, but not always. Victims can ask if prints may be lifted, but not all officers are trained to do so. They may have to call someone in to assist.
Also on most cases the offender breaks the window and grabs what they see, not touching anything else. The crime scene officer will be able to tell if they see anything. If the victim says that they have not touched the vehicle the possibility of lifting a good print is better.
Most times the prints come back to the owner.
Townwatch again says: Don’t leave ANYTHING in your car.
